Festival Patron Ensi PayneMessage from the Patron Ensi Payne

Dear Festival Friends and newcomers to the Festival

This year I am writing a personal and direct message to you all. It’s Sunday morning and cooling rain is falling. I’m listening to that hauntingly beautiful Schubert string quintet in C Major. Thoughts slip away from the music to friends. Friends I’ve met through music; some close friendships over years, some brief but intense encounters with music and people, which makes me realise how important and enriching music and friends can be in our lives.

I’ve made a resolution this year and I’m inviting you to share it with me. “Let 2010 be a year to listen to beautiful music”. Not just beautiful music but music that is new, music that will expand our horizons.

The Festival program provides many opportunities to do this, with its range and exceptional performances. The first weekend offers classical music with a difference: I wonder what an ensemble of seven harps will sound like and I look forward to the unique and moving music of William Barton. What an occasion when the winner of the 2008 Sydney International Piano Competition gives a concert in Kendall. Kendall Hall, being a timber building, has excellent acoustics and is an ideal venue for chamber music.

Added colour and a touch of magic are promised with the Laurieton Lantern Parade. What a lovely way to involve people of all ages in the community, who have been busy making lanterns since early in January, and the designs and shapes are truly spectacular.

A Festival such as this cannot take place without people who have imagination and considerable organisational ability, who are prepared to take financial risks and put in many hours of hard work. So, thank you to the Festival Director, the Management Committee, sponsors, the volunteer workers and especially the performers, who devote their lives to bringing us music of high quality.

Please take the opportunity to enjoy the music, the talks, the visual and social aspects of this 15th Camden Haven Music Festival. Let’s make it a great success.
